Powder-coating is basically the professional way to paint metal. It’s a process that uses a dry powder instead of liquid paint. This powder is typically made from a combination of resin and pigment, and it is electrostatically charged so that it sticks to the surface being coated. Once applied, the coated material is heated in an oven to cure the powder, causing it to melt and form a smooth, durable, and hard finish. It’s commonly used for other products like car parts, appliances, and other items that require a tough, protective finish. The result is a smooth, uniform, and durable surface that’s resistant to scratching, chipping, fading, and wearing.
For two main reasons: One being the color of the hardware. Powder-coated hardware will provide the color you like so it can blend with your property or a specific design you are looking for. Each color can provide a different style being black a very popular color these days especially in modern environments.
The other reason, which maybe is the most important one: It will provide an extra layer of protection on top of your already resistant material. Even though our hardware is very strong against the elements, unfortunately, they are (the majority) made of stainLESS steel and not stainFREE steel. It’s very low maintenance but it will require some cleaning occasionally. If not cleaned properly, it can stain (which is easy to clean and remove) but eventually can transform into rust in the long term. A color coat on top of the metal will create a shield that will keep the hardware basically maintenance-free. This is very IMPORTANT, if not MANDATORY, in areas near the Ocean. Hardware installed outdoors on top of the Ocean or just a few yards away from it can stain very quickly if not cleaned properly. The closer to the Ocean, the most recommended is to have the hardware powder-coated for an extra layer of protection.
It depends on the size of the piece and how difficult it will be to coat it. Usually, the larger the piece, the higher the cost. In any case, it’s usually just a few dollars per part or per linear foot of rail. Plus, a $250 flat fee for any powder-coating batch. So, your price will start at $250 and increase according to the quantity of pieces to be coated.
Understand how the process works
It depends on the quantity and color. Usually, it takes from 5 to 15 business days, being the most common range between 8 and 11 business days.
It can last a lifetime if cleaned occasionally. If not cleaned, especially near the Ocean, it can corrode after a decade or so. A powder-coated piece of hardware behaves similarly like a car always exposed outdoors. It’s important to mention that some discoloration is expected as well without compromising the protection level on the hardware. If necessary or desired, an extra coating using a spray just for color can be applied at the spot.
Due to some technical limitations and especially durability requirements on the hardware due to the level of exposure our parts usually are subject to, just SOLID colors are recommended for this service. This limitation results in “only” 1,290 colors to choose from (per Feb 2025).54
