1. Choose High-Quality, Corrosion-Resistant Materials
The best way to prevent rust is to use materials designed to withstand the elements.
โ 316 Marine-Grade Stainless Steel OR BETTER โ This premium-grade stainless steel contains molybdenum, making it highly resistant to saltwater, humidity, and harsh weather conditions. Itโs the gold standard for outdoor and coastal railing systems.
โ Powder-Coated Stainless Steel โ Powder-coating adds an extra layer of protection, making railings even more durable and resistant to corrosion.
๐น At West Railings, we exclusively use 316 marine-grade stainless steel (or better!) for our railing systems to ensure maximum durability, even in challenging environments. Other companies provide some materials in 304 stainless steel which is an inferior material and not suited for outdoor installations. They can be fine for indoors installations, but to have always the best materials for our customers, we DONโT SELL 304-grade stainless steel. Actually, some of our parts are even made using 2205 duplex-grade stainless steel (also known as surgical-grade) which can be even better than 316 marine-grade.
2. Apply Protective Coatings
Adding an extra barrier between your railing and environmental elements helps prolong its lifespan.
โ Powder Coating โ A highly durable finish that resists chipping, peeling, and corrosion.
โ Protective Sealants โ Stainless steel can benefit from occasional applications of a stainless-steel polish to maintain its finish.
3. Follow Proper Maintenance Practices
Regular upkeep keeps your railing looking great and prevents small issues from turning into major problems.
โ Routine Cleaning
๐งฝ Use mild soap and water to wipe down railings and remove dirt, salt, and pollutants.
๐ฟ For coastal or poolside installations, rinse railings often to prevent salt or chlorine buildup.
โ Periodic Inspections
๐ Every few months, check for loose fittings, scratches, or minor rust spots.
๐ง Address any issues immediately before they worsen.
โ Surface Rust Treatment
If minor rust stains appear, use a non-abrasive cleaner designed for stainless steel to restore the finish. Avoid harsh scrubbing tools that could scratch the surface.
